Our Community
SHAWN was officially launched on 9th March, 2019. The event was set up around International Women's Day. Our main goal is to raise the standard for African women, to address barriers to participation and to build their capacity to achieve their best in life.

Founder's Story This is Angie Mwafulirwa, she is passionate about women, refugees and asylum seekers and the challenges they face. She works as a community development worker and her role gives her the opportunity to give back to these groups of people. Her passion mainly derives from the fact that she has had experience of being a migrant having to jump through so many hurdles in the journey to settlement in the UK.
Navigating life in a tough and alien system shaped Angie into an activist, hence the desire to support other women. Angie holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Science (Sociology) from the University of Malawi and a Diploma in Cognitive Behavior Therapy (Counselling) which led her into setting up Positive Changes Counselling Service aimed at offering counselling support and especially from a culturally sensitive perspective. She also holds a Master’s Degree in Human Rights Law from the University of Strathclyde and a Postgraduate Degree in Community Development from the University of Glasgow. Angie is married with three children. Angie likes to think of herself as a people person, passionate to influence others to progress in life. This is the vision that birthed SHAWN, to sharpen other people. Angie is the author of a personal development manual Uncovering the New You, a book which will support you as you endeavour to meet your goals. Our StoryOur organization was established with the hope of creating change in individual lives, communities and globally. We hope to see women empowered to create change and make impact within their spheres of influence and beyond.
Our passion is to help women secure and realise their human rights. We fully subscribe to the Convention of the Elimination of all forms of discrimination against Women (CEDAW). See https://www.un.org/womenwatch/daw/cedaw/. In the same vein, we uphold the rights of the child as enshrined in the UNCRC which is closely related to all other human rights. More information on children's rights can be found here: https://www.unicef.org.uk/what-we-do/un-convention-child-rights/ We acknowledge women as the key care givers in our communities and therefore their rights are intertwined with those of children. |
